Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has imposed a Liquidated and Ascertained Damages (LAD) penalty totalling RM9.1 million on the KLIA Aerotrain project contractor, ALSTOM IJM Construction Sdn Bhd and Pestech Technology Sdn Bhd (IJMC-Pestech Joint Venture).
The Ministry of Transport Malaysia (MOT), in a written reply published on the Dewan Rakyat website, confirmed that the action was taken following the contractor’s failure to complete the new aerotrain system at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) according to the agreed schedule.
RM100,000 Per Day for 91 Days
According to MOT, the LAD penalty was imposed over 91 days from 1 April 2025 to 30 June 2025.
“As stipulated in the contract, the LAD amount imposed is RM100,000 per day, bringing the total to RM9.1 million,” the statement read.
System Confirmed Safe and Operational
MAHB has previously confirmed that an independent rail assessor has verified the KLIA Aerotrain system is now operating as intended.
According to the assessment, service disruptions experienced since the system first came into operation are considered normal for a complex rail system of this nature and do not pose any safety risks — given the engineering controls and continuous monitoring measures that have been put in place.
