A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet has crashed during a night flight exercise in the Balikesir region of western Türkiye in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The incident claimed the life of the pilot operating the aircraft.
According to information released by Turkish defence authorities, the aircraft departed from the 9th Main Jet Base in Balikesir at approximately 12:56am local time before communication between the pilot and the control centre abruptly cut out.
The aircraft’s tracking signal was also lost shortly after.
Wreckage Located After Signal Loss

Following the loss of radio contact, an immediate search operation was launched involving security forces and rescue teams. The effort eventually led to the discovery of the crash site and aircraft wreckage in the area.
The Ministry of Defence subsequently confirmed that the pilot could not be saved. The identity of the victim was not disclosed in the initial statement, and a formal investigation has been opened to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Accident Investigation Team Established

A special accident investigation team has been formed to assess all possible factors — including technical failure, weather conditions, and operational aspects specific to night flight.
The analysis process is expected to take time given the detailed examination of flight data and aircraft components involved.
In a related development, local authorities including the Balikesir Governor’s office extended their condolences to the family of the victim.
The incident adds to the record of military aviation accidents and raises renewed questions about the challenges and risks inherent in tactical night flight operations.
