Just under one year since its local debut, the MG S5 EV crossover is now locally assembled (CKD) in Malaysia.

The local assembly effort was handled by EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) at its Pegoh plant in Melaka, with the first CKD unit roll-off ceremony being officiated by Melaka chief minister Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Yusoh.
First SAIC Model to be Locally-Assembled in Malaysia
With this CKD commencement, the MG S5 EV became the first SAIC Motor model to be locally assembled in Malaysia, marking a significant milestone for MG Motor Malaysia since its re-introduction to the Malaysian market a few years ago.

“This first line-off of the MG S5 EV CKD represents a significant milestone for MG in Malaysia and reflects our long-term commitment to localisation and strengthening Malaysia’s role in the regional electric vehicle ecosystem,” said Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia.
“With local assembly, we are able to bring our vehicles closer to Malaysian customers while strengthening the country’s automotive supply chain, supporting local vendors, and contributing to the broader EV ecosystem,” the MD added.
CKD MG S5 EV Now Open for Booking, Minor Specs Change
Today’s CKD roll-off also coincides with the booking commencement for the new, locally-assembled MG S5 EV, and there are a few updates that the CKD model gets over their fully-imported (CBU) counterparts.
Firstly, the CKD S5 now gets a slight power increment to now deliver 205 PS and 350 Nm, making it 35 PS and 100 Nm more powerful than the outgoing CBU model.

To support this power-up, the CKD S5 also gets faster 150 kW DC charging ability, which will see its 62 kWh LFP pack charging from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes. Also improved is the claimed WLTP range from 430 km in the CBU model to now 446 km, and that is despite both its battery capacity and type remaining unchanged from the previous version.
Mind you, the CKD MG S5 EV will only be available in a single Lux variant, with a tentative price starting at RM120,000. Said price will be inclusive of a standard 7-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty, an 8-year or 180,000 km battery warranty, and a separate 8-year or 160,000 km warranty for the motor control unit.
