We often calculate the value of our tangible goods like cars, homes, and our investments but hardly ever consider the true cost of absence.
That is until Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) introduced the Volvo Selamat Calculator, an interactive reflection exercise developed in partnership with Mr Money TV to truly see the weight of one’s absence and everything it carries.
Self-Assessment Exercise to Remind Malaysians to be Safer
The calculator starts with a simple online questionnaire that takes regular data like your age, career, income, dependents, lifestyle, and personal stakes, where it will then generate a safety risk profile alongside an estimate of the financial and emotional impact left behind.
Displayed in Ringgit (RM) for easier comprehension, these impacts include transferred financial burdens and interrupted progress to futures left unrealised.

Participants are grouped into one of four life-stage profiles—the backbone of the family, the co-pilot in a partnership, the independent soloist with a future ahead, and the climber who has worked tirelessly to build the life they have today.
VCM further explains that this Selamat calculator is meant to remind Malaysians of the consequences of inattention, complacency, and inaction on the road, and they are measured not only in a split second but also in the “unlived moments, unfinished futures, and people we stand to lose if one day we do not make it home.”

“The Selamat Calculator isn’t meant to put a price on a life but to act as a gentle reminder to appreciate the value of our presence and what stands to be lost in our absence. Because the true value of our Selamat isn’t measured by wealth but by the people we hold close and the accomplishments we make,” said Patricia Yew, Sales & Marketing Director of VCM.
Meanwhile, Mr Money TV co-founder and CEO Peter Yong added, “The Selamat Calculator serves as a wake-up call, encouraging reflection on what truly matters and reminding us that the best and most important choices are not always financial ones, but the simplest: buckling our seatbelts, getting enough rest, or exercising patience behind the wheel.”

Those who are interested in trying out the Volvo Selamat Calculator can do so by visiting Volvo Malaysia’s official website, where they are required to fill up a simple questionnaire before getting their final assessments.
