Besides the next-gen Skyline teaser, Nissan has also unveiled the first official images of several new models, including the next-gen Nissan X-Trail.
For its fifth-gen iteration, this midsize SUV—which remains one of the brand’s most important products with nearly ten million units sold globally—gains Nissan’s e-Power range-extender hybrid powertrain system and sharper design elements.

Edgy Design Inspired by the New Leaf EV
From the official images, the new X-Trail appears to be edgier and bolder than the current model, featuring some design elements drawn from the likes of the new Leaf EV crossover.
The main highlight is the new front fascia, where the bonnet and the front bumper shutline intersect to create an X shape. Both the headlights and the front grille are integrated together to form a black mask-like graphic at the front, with the hexagonal grille inserts fading into the headlights to form the stylish hexagonal DRLs.
Also primed here are the illuminated Nissan logo placed at the centre of the front grille, plus two sharp vertical slats on both sides of the lower front bumper that are accompanied by a wide lower air intake.

From the side, the new X-Trail retains its not-so-sporty SUV silhouette just like the outgoing model, featuring thick D-pillars with the same hexagonal design elements seen on the headlights, diagonal lines on the front and rear doors, and two-tone alloy wheels with a hexagonal spoke design.
While none of the first images showcase the full rear part of the car, we can see that its taillight shape appears to be quite similar to the ones on the outgoing model, albeit featuring more intricate lighting signatures.
Powered by Nissan’s e-Power System
While Nissan did confirm that the next-gen X-Trail will get its proprietary e-Power hybrid system, the Japanese automaker didn’t exactly specify which versions it will be.
Having said that, our money goes to the latest third-gen e-Power system used on the new Qashqai crossover, featuring a 1.5-litre 3-cyl turbocharged petrol engine that acts as a generator to the 2.15-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that powers up its 205 PS five-to-one modular electric motor on the front axle.
Also expected to be primed in the new X-Trail is the e-4ORCE all-wheel drive (AWD) system that features a second e-motor driving the rear wheels, as well as the Nissan ProPilot ADAS suite.
Global Debut in 2027, Malaysia When?
And just like the aforementioned new Skyline, the upcoming fifth-gen X-Trail is also part of Nissan’s new product strategy that will see its product portfolio being reduced from 56 models to only 45 for faster product development.
Speaking of which, the X-Trail is easily the slowest out of all Japanese midsize SUVs to get an update here in Malaysia, with the current one sold in our market being the third-gen model that was already discontinued in other markets for several years now.
With the new model now on the horizon, could we see Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ECTM) skip the fourth-gen model entirely and go straight with the fifth-gen one instead?
