National automaker Proton announced that the Proton X50 SUV has surpassed yet another sales milestone, with a total of 161,033 units sold across Malaysia and export markets.
This stellar success has also cemented the X50’s position as Malaysia’s number one B-segment SUV—a title that it has held for the past five consecutive years.
A Key Figure in Proton’s Brand Revival
Since its introduction back in Oct 2020, the X50 has become one of the most important models for the national automaker, where it represents a turning point for Proton while helping to push the brand’s growth into the SUV market segment.
Its latest version, the 2025 Proton X50 facelift, is looking to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, with more than 20,000 units already sold since its introduction last year. That positive momentum continued into 2026, with Proton delivering 4,271 units in the first two months of the year—a feat that further cemented its status as one of the most popular SUVs in Malaysia.
This feat is more impressive when considering that we’ve seen many newcomers in this ever-competitive B-SUV market segment, and many buyers now expect features previously available in higher-segment vehicles to feature here. Proton then addresses these expectations by offering decent performance in the form of the new 1.5-litre turbocharged i-GT engine, a comprehensive suite of modern amenities, and an engaging driving experience, all at an accessible price point.
Popular Choice Amongst Younger Buyers—Local & Abroad
In its recent customer data, Proton says that X50 owners interviewed have an average rating of 89% for usage satisfaction, while over 70% of buyers cite design and performance as the main driving factors for their purchases.
Further analysis by the automaker also showed that 68% of X50 buyers are aged between 25 and 35 years old, with a large portion of them being new to the Proton brand.

“The Proton X50 represents the evolution of Proton into a modern technology-driven automotive brand. It offers Malaysian customers a combination of performance, connectivity, and safety that was previously difficult to find in this segment, which is why it continues to resonate strongly with buyers,” said Dato’ Ir Abdul Rashid Musa, CEO of Proton Edar.

Beyond its domestic success, the X50 has also contributed significantly to Proton’s export plans, where more than 5,000 units have been exported since its introduction. This feat is enough to make it the second most popular export model by the automaker, and the recent version that already debuted in Brunei is expected to continue its role as a key driver of Proton’s export growth strategy in the years ahead.
