BYD’s Flash Charger is Heading to Malaysia Soon, and Other EVs Can Use It Too

You may have seen several videos on social media showcasing BYD’s new ultra-fast Flash Charging technology (ours included), and truth be told, it seems that such innovation could be years away from reaching our market.

However, it may arrive faster than we anticipated, as BYD Malaysia recently confirmed that the BYD Flash Charging technology is on its way to Malaysia, which could significantly transform our local EV charging infrastructure landscape.

Up to 1,500 kW Power, 10-70% in Five Minutes

Announced during a recent media trip at BYD’s all-terrain test track in Zhengzhou, China, the new Flash Charging tech features a series of superlative numerals that certainly makes other EV charging tech look years behind.

Some of these figures include up to 1,500 kW of maximum power delivery, a super high-voltage 1,000-volt Super e-Platform battery architecture with BYD’s second-gen ‘Blade’ battery technology, as well as lightning-fast charging times of 10% to 70% in five minutes.

What’s even more impressive is how the charging curve retains its high power input even at higher state-of-charge (SoC), which results in the company claiming a 10% to 97% charge just takes nine minutes via the Flash Charger.

And to put their money where their mouth is, BYD conducted a live charging session using their new charging tech, using a Denza Z9 GT that features both the company’s new 1,000-volt architecture and the second-gen Blade battery pack.

Starting from 7% with an estimated range of 150 km (likely CLTC-based), the battery percentage quickly rose to the two targeted percentages, reaching a 70% SoC in roughly six minutes and 97% in around ten minutes with over 900 km of estimated range available.

Coming to Malaysia Soon, Open to Non-BYD EVs Too

According to BYD Malaysia managing director Jacob Ma, the company is planning to bring the BYD Flash Charging technology to Malaysia soon, with initial rollout set to take place in selected BYD and Denza showrooms as well as service centres before eventually making its way to public locations.

Despite its big figures and ultra-fast charging speeds, we’ve been told that the Flash Charger does not require any major changes or upgrades to the grid, as the whole setup operates together with a dedicated battery energy storage system (BESS).

What’s more interesting is that unlike some other EV brands who gatekeep their chargers, Jacob said that the BYD Flash Chargers will also be available to other non-BYD EVs in the future. That said, only a few BYD EVs with the new Super e-Platform could benefit from the Flash Chargers, so it would be somewhat wasteful for other lower-voltage EVs to utilise this charging tech.

On that note, this also means that current BYD and Denza models on sale in Malaysia, including the newly-updated 2026 BYD Atto 3, won’t exactly benefit from this new charging tech, but perhaps this could also hint at the arrival of Flash Charging-ready BYD and/or Denza models heading to our market in the near future.

Last but not least, BYD Malaysia has yet to reveal the specific locations, pricing, or official launch date for the new BYD Flash Charge stations, at least for now. Having said that, Malaysia is poised to become one of the first markets outside of China to get this ultra-fast charging technology. Excited?
