Local MotoGP and motorsport fans can breathe a sigh of relief, as the Malaysian government just signed a five-year extension to host the MotoGP World Championship at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit (SIC).

This new contract was signed between Malaysia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) and MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group, bringing in five more years of the world’s premier grand prix motorcycle championship not only to Malaysia but also to the Southeast Asian region as a whole.

Five More Years of Malaysian GP

Since its inception in 1991, the Malaysian Grand Prix has become one of the biggest sporting events in the region and one of the favourite races amongst MotoGP fans worldwide, with the last 2025 edition seeing a total of 190,977 visitors flocking to the SIC.

Said venue has been appointed as the main host for this GP since 1999, taking over from the now-demolished Batu Tiga circuit in Shah Alam before a one-year stint in 1998 at the Pasir Gudang circuit.

Commenting on this extension, KBS minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari said, “This renewal goes beyond securing Malaysia’s place on the MotoGP global calendar. It reflects our commitment to strengthening Malaysia’s position as a leading motorsports destination while creating opportunities through economic growth, talent development, and industry expansion.

“More importantly, MotoGP Malaysia has become a platform that brings Malaysians together, strengthens our sense of national pride and continues to stand as Malaysia’s longest-running international sporting event since its first edition in 1991,” the minister continued.

Meanwhile, MotoGP CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta added, “Malaysia is an important market for MotoGP, where we have a strong fanbase and have seen the positive economic impact of MotoGP increase year-over-year.”

“Now, we aim to grow both exponentially. Sepang is a fantastic home for our sport—well-connected to one of the world’s truly global cities: Kuala Lumpur, the host city for our unforgettable 2026 Season Launch.”
