Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) has expanded its big bikes lineup with the unveiling of their latest flagship supersport model, the new 2027 Yamaha YZF-R9.
This road-legal version of Yamaha’s Supersport World Championship (WorldSSP) racer will be locally assembled (CKD) at HLYM’s plant in Sungai Buloh, priced at RM68,000 excluding road tax, insurance, and registration.

Only available in this Icon Blue colourway, the new R9 will be heading to all authorised Yamaha BLU Universe dealers nationwide starting from Jan 2027 onwards.
Yamaha’s Flagship R-Series Model for Malaysia
Powering the new R9 is the same 890cc inline-3 CP3 engine used on both the MT-09 and Tracer 9, albeit with a slightly different tuning for a total system output of 119 PS at 10,000 RPM and 93 Nm of torque at 7,000 RPM.
Power is then sent to the rear wheel via a six-speed gearbox, while the quickshifter comes with two modes—Setting 1 for upshifts when accelerating and downshifts on deceleration, and Setting 2 for downshifts while accelerating and upshifts while decelerating.

Unlike its fellow CP3-equipped siblings, the new R9 underpins a new aluminium Deltabox frame weighing 9.7 kg, which Yamaha claims as the lightest-ever aluminium frame to be used on their supersport model.
Said lightweight frame is then hooked to fully adjustable 43 mm KYB inverted front forks plus a KYB rear shock absorber, while stopping power is provided by Brembo Stylema monoblock front callipers and a Nissin single calliper at the rear.

Those large, MotoGP-style front winglets you see are not just for show, as they were developed through wind tunnel testing to generate downforce and reduce front-end lift to the R9, as well as improve its high-speed stability.
Flagship-Level Electronics & Amenities
To go with its solid mechanical parts, the new R9 is loaded with serious electronic bits, including a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) that supports lean-sensitive traction control, slide control, lift control, and brake control—all customisable through the Yamaha Ride Control system.
There’s also the launch control system, plus Yamaha’s Y-TRAC Rev smartphone app that works with Yamaha Y-Connect to provide lap timing, riding data analysis, and ride-log storage for riders to check out and assess.
Other key equipment primed to the new R9 include the following:
- 5-inch full-colour TFT metre display with four selectable themes
- A dedicated Track Mode with lap time recorder
- 14-litre fuel tank
- 830 mm seat height with 140 mm of ground clearance
- Full LED lighting units with a central projector headlight
