After a series of cryptic social media teasers, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has finally launched the latest version of its 7-seater D-segment SUV model, the 2026 Volkswagen Tayron.
Available in two variants, Tayron Elegance and Tayron R-Line, this D-SUV is locally assembled (CKD) at Volkswagen Group Malaysia’s plant in Pekan, Pahang, with the Elegance being the first variant launched in Malaysia with a recommended retail price of RM189,890.
Said price is inclusive of a standard two-year warranty, but it can go up to RM200,760 if buyers opt for the Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP) that brings a five-year manufacturer’s warranty, five-year roadside assistance, and a five-year maintenance package. As for the Tayron R-Line, this sportier variant will be introduced on a later date with an indicative price range of RM259,000 and RM269,000.
In conjunction with the upcoming National Day, the first 69 customers who buy the new Tayron Elegance will get a special Merdeka package that includes seven years of free maintenance, personal accident and car key coverage, as well as a chance to win a three-day two-night luxury family getaway.
1.5 eTSI Mild Hybrid & 2.0 TSI Engine Options
Starting with the Tayron Elegance, the non-R-Line variant of this D-SUV is powered by the same mild hybrid (MHEV) powertrain setup used on the recently-launched Golf R-Line Mk8.5.
It uses a 1.5-litre 4-cyl turbocharged petrol engine as its core, which is then mated to a 48-volt MHEV system to deliver a combined output of 150 PS and 250 Nm. Power is then sent to the front wheels (FWD) via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission to enable a respectable 0-100 km/h sprint of 9.6 seconds.
As for the sportier Tayron R-Line, it uses a larger 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbocharged TSI petrol engine that makes 265 PS and 400 Nm. While paired with the same 7-speed DCT as the Elegance, the Tayron R-Line ups the ante by featuring VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive (AWD) system that helps this D-SUV to reach a faster century sprint time of 6.1 seconds.
Both Tayrons get the same MacPherson front and multi-link rear suspension setup, as well as the Dynamic Chassis Control Pro (DCC Pro) active suspension system that is said to provide a smooth ride for this family-friendly D-segment SUV.
Successor to the Tiguan Allspace
Granted, many Malaysians are unfamiliar with the Tayron name (a combination of ‘Tiger’ and ‘Iron’), as this SUV is relatively new not only in our market but also in the rest of the world, except for China, where the Tayron was originally launched.
The specific model launched today is the second-gen model that debuted globally back in 2024 and has since become the direct replacement for VW’s previous ‘7-seater’ SUV, the Tiguan Allspace.
Unlike the Allspace, the new Tayron stands as a more proper D-segment SUV, spanning 4,792 mm long, 1,852 mm wide, and 1,660 mm tall with a 2,788 mm wheelbase, thus putting it on par with other popular D-SUVs such as the Chery Tiggo 9, Proton X90, and many more.
Opting for the Tayron Elegance will give you the stunning full-width LED bars with illuminated VW emblems on both ends, 18-inch ‘Napoli’ multi-spoke wheels, and five exterior colourways—Oryx White Pearl, Grenadilla Black Metallic, Dolphin Grey Metallic, Nightshade Blue Metallic, and Oyster Silver Metallic.
As for the Tayron R-Line, it gets the same colour options as the Elegance but with a sportier R-Line front bumper, side skirts, black accents on the rear bumper, an R-Line logo on the front doors, and fancier VW IQ.Light LED matrix headlights and larger 20-inch ‘York’ alloy wheels.
Three-Row SUV with Seven Seats
Inside, the new Tayron features a seven-seater configuration with a 2-3-2 layout, and the cabin is laced with plenty of modern and comfort amenities even in the non-R-Line trim level.
Some standard amenities primed here include a new 12.9-inch central infotainment display that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a smaller 10.25-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro metre cluster, an 8-speaker VW sound system, ergoActive Plus front seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions, “Varenna” leather upholstery, 30-colour ambient lights, ornamental wood dashboard trim, 15-watt wireless chargers, triple-zone climate control, and many more.
Opting for the R-Line will grant you several extra bits, such as a larger 15-inch infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a head-up display (HUD), brushed stainless steel pedals, a black headliner, “Varenna” leather upholstery with blue R-Line accents, and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with a subwoofer.
Regardless of variants, all Tayron variants boast the same practicality edge, featuring a 345-litre boot space that is expandable to 1,905 litres with 2nd and 3rd row seats folded down. Both variants also get nine airbags as standard, as well as VW’s latest IQ.Drive driving assistance suite that includes ADAS functions like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Assist, Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert & Exit Warning, and many more.
