IN conjunction with the patriotic month, Proton organised a media test drive with Malaysia’s number one B-segment SUV — the all-new Proton X50 2026 — which arrives with comprehensive updates across its engine, design, technology, and a host of new features.
This time around, our destination was one of the most historically significant states in the country — Melaka, located along the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Known as the Historic City, Melaka was once one of the most important maritime trading hubs in the region as far back as the 15th century, owing to its strategic position along the Straits of Melaka.

Today, Melaka is celebrated not only for its rich cultural heritage and colonial architecture, but also as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
Before embarking on the 149km journey from Shah Alam, we collected our test units at the Proton Centre of Excellence (COE) and chose the Proton X50 2026 Flagship — the highest variant in the new X50 range.
Proton X50 2026 Specifications
- All-new 1.5 TD i-GT engine
- Maximum power of 133kW (178hp) and torque of 290Nm
- 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT)

Proton has also packed in over RM10,000 worth of added value through new features and technology upgrades on this model.
Why the Proton X50 2026 Is Perfect for New Drivers
Many new drivers feel nervous about getting behind the wheel of an SUV, given its larger footprint compared to a sedan or hatchback. But the Proton X50 2026 comes loaded with features that make it genuinely beginner-friendly. Here’s what I experienced over two days of driving this subcompact SUV around Melaka:
1. Precise and Comfortable Steering
The steering feels well-balanced and responsive — easy enough for less experienced drivers to feel confident with immediately.
The ergonomic design with power-assisted steering makes single-handed control effortless, while the steering-mounted controls allow various functions to be accessed without breaking concentration on the road.
2. Four Driving Modes to Suit Any Mood

The Proton X50 2026 offers four driving modes: Sport, Comfort, Eco, and Adaptive.
- Sport: For drivers who enjoy a more spirited experience. This mode sharpens engine response and keeps the car feeling composed even at speeds of 150 to 170 km/h
- Comfort and Eco: Prioritise ride comfort and fuel efficiency respectively
- Adaptive: Intelligently adjusts power and fuel usage based on your driving style — ideal for drivers who aren’t sure which mode suits them best
3. Full Level 2 ADAS Suite
The Flagship variant we drove comes equipped with a comprehensive Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), comprising:
- Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
- Rear Collision Warning (RCW)
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
- Door Open Warning (DOW)
- Walk-away auto lock
- 6 airbags
- Reverse camera

The Proton X50 2026 also retains the Automatic Parking Assist (APA) feature carried over from the previous model — covering reverse parking, parallel parking, and the newly added free-space parking mode.
For the free-space parking mode, you simply set your desired spot via the infotainment screen and the system takes care of the steering automatically. While the parking process is a touch on the slower side, the manoeuvring accuracy is close to 90 percent — and it’s genuinely reassuring for new drivers.
4. A Small Feature That Glasses Wearers Will Actually Appreciate

The Proton X50 2026 comes fitted with a translucent sun visor on both the driver and front passenger sides. The lightweight plastic material helps reduce glare effectively, whether you’re driving under the midday sun or dealing with oncoming headlights at night.
It’s a small touch, but one that makes a meaningful difference for drivers who are sensitive to light or simply prefer not to wear sunglasses while driving.
5. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Are Finally Here
This is arguably one of the most significant improvements Proton has made — the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the SUV’s infotainment system.
With this update, drivers can now seamlessly connect their smartphones and access essential apps like Google Maps, Spotify, and Waze, or take calls safely without ever taking their eyes off the road.
For new drivers in particular, this addition is a genuine game-changer — especially for navigation. Having map directions displayed clearly on the infotainment screen eliminates the need for aftermarket phone holders and significantly reduces the temptation to handle a phone while driving, making the whole experience safer and more convenient.
An Everyday SUV That Works for Everyone
After driving the Proton X50 2026 from Shah Alam all the way to Melaka, one thing is clear — this B-segment SUV isn’t just comfortable, it’s genuinely confidence-inspiring on a long drive. Smooth power delivery, precise steering, and a comprehensive safety package all contribute to a reassuring experience behind the wheel.
For new drivers, the APA parking assist and full ADAS suite take the edge off driving a larger vehicle for the first time, while Adaptive mode keeps the driving experience relaxed without constantly fiddling with settings.
All things considered, the Proton X50 2026 is a complete B-segment SUV — equally at home for daily commuting, weekend road trips, and for anyone making the step up from a sedan to an SUV for the very first time.
