MANY owners of modern cars are still confused about how the push start button actually works — specifically whether they need to press it more than once to start the engine.
Perodua has now stepped in to set the record straight: to start your engine, one press is all you need. Not two. Not three.
The Correct Way to Start a Push Start Engine
Perodua shared the correct steps, and they could not be simpler:
- Press the brake pedal
- Press the Engine Start/Stop button once
- Engine starts
That is it. No need to press it multiple times.
If you press the button without holding the brake pedal, the system will only activate Accessory Mode (ACC) or power up the vehicle’s electrical systems — the engine will not start.
Why Do So Many People Press It More Than Once?

Old habits from conventional key ignition systems are the main culprit. Many drivers assume the push start button works the same way — requiring multiple presses to cycle through phases like ACC and ON before the engine fires up.
The reality is that modern vehicles are designed to be far simpler and faster than that. One press with the brake pedal held down is all it takes.
Avoid the Confusion — and Avoid Unnecessary Wear
While pressing the button multiple times will not necessarily damage anything, it is an unnecessary habit that can cause confusion on the instrument display or unintentionally cycle through the vehicle’s system modes.
So from now on, keep it simple:
- Press the brake
- Press once
- Drive off
That is genuinely all there is to it.
