Jaecoo J5 EV Debuts in Malaysia – CKD, 402 km WLTP Range, RM118,800

Following a series of previews, Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia has finally launched its first-ever all-electric model, the Jaecoo J5 EV.

Locally assembled (CKD) at Chery Corporate Malaysia’s plant in Shah Alam, this new all-electric B-segment SUV comes in a single variant, priced at RM118,800 on-the-road sans insurance, making it around RM10,000 costlier than its pure combustion twin.

For that price, buyers will get a standard 7-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty, plus a separate 10-year or 200,000 km warranty for the EV battery.

There’s also a special launch package for the first 1,000 units until Oct 31 this year, which includes one year of free unlimited charging with JomCharge, free one-year vehicle insurance, free three years of internet data for the infotainment suite, a complimentary 7 kW home wallbox charger with a V2L device, and other accessories—all combined worth around RM10,000.

Single Variant, Single Motor, Single Battery Option

The Malaysian-spec J5 EV comes in a single variant, featuring a single, front-mounted (FWD) electric motor rated at 211 PS and 288 Nm, which O&J claims is good for a century sprint time of 7.7 seconds and a V-max of 175 km/h.

Juice is provided by a 58.9-kWh LFP battery pack sourced from CATL that can provide up to 402 km of WLTP range. Interestingly, the LFP pack offered to our local-spec J5 EV is larger than the Thai-spec J5 EV (50.6 kWh) but still smaller than the Indonesian J5 EV (60.9 kWh).

As for charging, the J5 EV can support up to 130 kW of DC fast charging that sees its LFP pack going from 30% to 80% in 28 minutes. AC charging, on the other hand, is capped at 11 kW for the EV SUV, meaning a 10-100% charge takes around seven hours to complete.

Same Boxy SUV Design with Pet-Friendly Interior

As detailed in our preview report, the J5 EV looks very similar to its petrol twin, with the most notable difference being the flatter, cleaner front face that swaps the petrol J5’s vertical ‘waterfall’ front grille for a grill-less, EV-like appearance.

Another slight change is the powered charging port located on the front-right quarter panel and the EV badge on its tailgate, while the car still rides on 18-inch wheels as standard, albeit with a more enclosed, aero-optimized spoke design.

The same goes for the interior, where the J5 EV’s cabin is engulfed by the same, TÜV-certified antibacterial, scratch-resistant, and low-VOC faux-leather upholstery, which the automaker claims to be very pet-friendly.

Sticking with the pet theme is the dedicated Pet Mode, which keeps the A/C running, and the car doors keep the A/C running and the car doors all locked to allow pets to remain in the vehicle in a very comfortable manner while the owner is outside the car.

To go with those, the J5 EV also retains its ICE twin’s large 480-litre boot space, which is then paired with a 35-litre frunk for added practicality.
